Umphrey's McGee's new album Blueprints is built from fan-selected moments of live improvisation. The band took these spontaneous "Legos" from various shows and carefully assembled them--adding lyrics and new elements--to craft fully realized songs. Though many of the compositions are long-form, each track is divided into multiple sections, allowing listeners to explore individual components or enjoy the songs as complete pieces. The physical release features hand-drawn blueprints of the bands actual pedals, including detailed references to each segment's origin--dates, venues, and lyrical motifs. Recorded in a hidden theater atop Chicago's legendary Metro, the band road-tested the evolving material with intimate nightly audiences, making Blueprints a true collaboration between band and fans, from spark to structure.
